Mortillery – Shapeshifter

Canadian thrashers Mortillery are back with their ferocious 3rd album Shapeshifter.

Taking influence from bands like Judas Priest and Death Angel, Mortillery have crafted themselves into the thrash scene since forming in 2008, releasing Murder Death Kill in 2011 and Origin Of Extinction in 2013 which helped them gain fans within the metal world, and have shared the stage with the likes of 3 Inches Of Blood, Cattle Decapitation, Destruction, Havok, Razor, Skeletonwitch and Suffocation.

Shapeshifter showcases the bands power with songs such as “Torture”, which starts with a quick bass intro, that leads into some old school era thrash with a punk edge, Cara McCutchen’s vocals scream out in agony, especially when shouting the title “Torture”, this song is extremely reminiscent of fellow Canadians 3 Inches Of Blood in vocal power, it has an aggressive pace and is pure thrash metal.

The song “Wendigo” stood out to me as I have a fascination with mythical creatures, also the Wendigo is a evil native spirit that is meant to roam around the Great Lakes area of Canada, the song itself has extremely evil sounding instrumentals, especially the bass and the drums fixing together in a manic way, whilst the guitars rip into you alongside the piercing shrill vocals, the lyrics tell the tale as if you are the spirit itself, this is a Wendigo attack in its fiercest form, unleash the beast!!!

Shapeshifter is epic, it seems to be based around mythology and the exploration of those themes, the vocals are spot on and will be pleasing to thrash fans appetites, give it a spin and shapeshift yourself into the ferocious chaos that is Mortillery.
