A few tweaks here and there, and these guys could be a force to be reckoned with.
Cowardice – Without Condolence
New Jersey quintet, COWARDICE, have self-released their debut full-length album that speaks to the inner depths of the dark unknown. Slow, down-tuned, sludgy riffs are the mainstay on WITHOUT CONDOLENCE, reminiscent of early Black Sabbath. The somber atmosphere permeates the candle-lit cave with each haunting atonal riff and screams despair.
Once you get past the menacing ambiance that COWARDICE manages to embark on, there’s really nothing to latch onto on this record. With the exception of a few riffs here and there, this album is pretty much a mundane experience. With the exception of YIELD MY PRAYERS, which is a reverb drenched, metal ballad of a cliché, each song started out with some pretty menacing feedback but unfortunately that’s where the music reached its’ plateau. The screaming elf vocal phrasing was a bit off and some of the timing of the delivery just didn’t seem to fit properly. On top of that, the drumming had a hard time matching the intensity of the guitar parts.
I respect any band that puts themselves out there for the world to critique, especially self-funding bands that have no label backing, but this just wasn’t for me. I’m sure there is an audience out there that would appreciate these guys and maybe with a few tweaks here and there, they can be a force to be reckoned with.
